IV Sedation at Circus Dental
Intravenous (IV) sedation is a safe method used in dentistry to help patients feel calm and comfortable during dental procedures. At Circus Dental we provide this service for our patients for a range of reasons.
What does IV sedation involve?
IV sedation involves sedative medications being administered directly into a vein via an intravenous line. This medicine puts the patient into a state of deep relaxation. IV sedation is sometimes referred to as "conscious sedation" because patients remain conscious but are often so relaxed that they may not remember much of the procedure.
When is IV sedation used in dentistry?
We can use IV sedation for a range of reasons, here are some of our more common uses:
- Anxiety and Fears: IV sedation is particularly beneficial for patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia. Being sedated allows them to undergo treatments they might otherwise avoid.
- Complex or Lengthy Procedures: We can use IV sedation for intricate procedures such as dental implant placement, wisdom teeth extractions, or full-mouth reconstructions. If you are going to be receiving a treatment which will require you to be in the dentist chair for a long period of time we may offer you sedation for your own comfort.
- Gag Reflex Management: If you have a strong gag reflex, IV sedation helps your throat muscles relax, making many dental procedures more manageable and comfortable for you.
How does IV sedation work?
Our dentists are well trained in administering IV sedations and will talk you through the entire process prior to the appointment and on the day. A thorough medical evaluation will be conducted beforehand to ensure you are able to receive the sedation and all risk factors are addressed.
The sedative is delivered via an intravenous line (a very thin tube) to you arm or hand, allowing your dentist to manage immediate adjustments of the dosage as is needed.
Once the medication is in your system you will remain conscious and responsive, but you will feel very relaxed and slightly detached from the procedure, reducing any stress or anxiety.
You will feel sleepy for a few hours following the procedure. You must be chaperoned to the appointment and for 24 hours after the appointment. You must not drive, sign any legally binding documents or be responsible for children.
Recovery is typically faster compared to general anaesthesia.
