Good clinical photographs are some of the most useful tools in a practice. They support diagnosis and treatment planning, help patients understand and accept treatment, strengthen communication with the lab, and protect you if a case is ever questioned. Most of us own a camera, but few of us get consistent, standardised results from it.

This practical study club takes delegates through the standard dental photographic series and then puts it into practice straight away. We will cover camera settings that work every time, lighting and flash choices, how to use retractors, mirrors and contrasters without fuss, and how nurses and dentists can work as a team to take a full series in a few minutes. The course finishes with some consent, GDPR and storage advice, so delegates leave knowing how to use their images properly as well as how to take them.

Suitable for dentists, dental nurses, hygienists and therapists.

Delegates are welcome to bring their own camera or smartphone.

Aim

To give the dental team the knowledge and practical skills to take consistent, high-quality clinical photographs, and to use and store them safely and appropriately

Learning objectives

By the end of the evening, delegates will be able to:

  1. Explain the clinical, communication and medico-legal value of dental photography.
  2. Choose and set up camera, lens and flash settings for intraoral, extraoral and portrait views.
  3. Take a standardised clinical photographic series using retractors, mirrors and contrasters, working efficiently as a team.
  4. Capture shade and colour reference images suitable for laboratory communication.
  5. Apply the principles of consent, GDPR and secure storage to clinical photographs.
