Mouth Cancer
Know the signs

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is one of the fastest-rising cancers in the UK, yet awareness remains worryingly low.

In 2024, 10,825  people were diagnosed with the disease in the UK, and sadly 3637 people lost their lives to mouth cancer.

Early detection is crucial, but many people are unaware of the symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of regular check-ups.

Here at Circus Dental we routinely carry out oral cancer checks during appointments so you can be sure that any early signs are caught quickly.

What is Mouth Cancer?

Mouth cancer refers to cancers that develop in the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and the roof or floor of the mouth.

Unlike some cancers, mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by a dentist or doctor, making routine visits essential.

Who is at Risk?

Anyone can develop mouth cancer, but certain factors increase the likelihood of this cancer developing:

  • Tobacco use - (including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco) is the biggest risk factor.
  • Alcohol consumption - when combined with smoking the risk increases.
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus) - is linked to a growing number of mouth cancer cases.
  • Poor diet - particularly a lack of fruit and vegetables can increase vulnerability.
  • Excessive sun exposure - can increase the risk of lip cancer.

Recognising the Symptoms

Mouth cancer can appear in many forms, which is why regular checking is so important. Some of the signs and symptoms to look out for include:

  • Ulcers that do not heal within three weeks.
  • Red or white patches in the mouth.
  • Unexplained lumps or swellings.
  • Persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in speech.

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek advice from your GP or dentist immediately.

Early Detection is Key

When mouth cancer is caught early, survival rates can improve dramatically - up to 90%. However, many people are diagnosed too late, when treatment is more complex and outcomes are not so positive.

Regular dental check-ups, self-checks at home, and raising awareness of the signs are vital to saving lives.

If during your appointment at Circus Dental we identify something that looks suspicious, we will  refer you on a fast track (2 week wait) pathway. You will then have a diagnostic biopsy taken and be seen by a head and neck specialist. We will talk you through the process if it is necessary.

How to Reduce Your Risk

Book an appointment with one of our dentists to have a full oral check up and put your mind at ease. You can reduce your risk of developing mouth cancer by:

  • Quitting smoking and avoiding tobacco in all forms.
  • Cutting down on alcohol and avoiding binge drinking.
  • Protecting yourself from HPV by considering vaccination and practicing safer sex.
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Using lip balm with SPF to protect against UV rays.

Mouth cancer may not receive the same attention as other cancers, but its impact can still be devastating. By talking openly, supporting awareness campaigns, and knowing the risks and symptoms, we can all play a part in saving lives.

If you haven’t had a dental check-up in a while, contact us today to book in with one of our professional and welcoming dentists - it could be more important than you think.
