Did you know that we have our very own lab onsite? This allows us to work closely with highly skilled technicians to design and create the very best, bespoke, natural-looking and functional dental restorations. Our team of lab technicians tell us more about the lab and why it benefits our patients here at Circus Dental.
What happens in Circus Dental’s in-house lab?
The lab creates new, true to life restorations that will replace the patients damaged, worn or old teeth. Our job is to mimic nature to provide something that in the best case scenario, is indistinguishable from the patient's natural surrounding teeth and gums.
For more exciting and comprehensive cases, we are able to provide the patient with a complete set of brand new teeth. We are focused on marrying functionality of the prosthesis with the patients aesthetic desires. For these cases to succeed it requires great harmony between patient, dentist, laboratory and nurse.
What innovative and interesting equipment is used in the lab?
Every day we use a 3D printer to bring items to life that we have designed on the computer, such as guides that enable correct and proper placement of implants.
In addition, we use a milling machine to finely reduce a block of lithium disilicate (comparable to glass) into a lifelike definitive tooth. All our crowns are trimmed, glazed and hand polished under a microscope and we glaze our crowns in a ceramic furnace.
Why is it beneficial to patients to have a lab onsite?
Communication between the patient, dentist and lab is second to none.
As technicians within the practice, we are able to visit the patient in the surgery throughout their treatment to take notes and photos of tooth shade and characteristics. There is no better way to achieve a lifelike final result, as well as offer a considerably more personal touch for all involved.
What changes are happening to the lab over the next few months?
To improve the level of service for our patients we are installing a new state-of-the-art laboratory, designed from the ground up for its technicians and subsequently, its patients.
The lab will be based around three main considerations: hygiene, technology and quality, rather than a more industrial approach of production quantity.
Even the room that it is located in has been chosen for its natural light so that the correct tooth shade can be achieved. We are really looking forward to the move.
What are your favourite parts of the lab-technician job?
Combining art, science and technology is always a fun mix.
Without sounding too cliche, every job is completely different and presents their own challenges. In the background you will hear history podcasts playing most of the day…
Are there any plans to expand the technician team?
As we are gaining more space, we are also excited to take on an apprentice technician who currently is already a qualified nurse within our team. We're looking forward to supporting her through her degree course to further her qualifications.
