Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
At Circus Dental

A child’s first dental visit can feel like a big milestone - for kids and parents alike. With the right preparation, it can be a positive, confidence-building experience that sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

At Circus Dental we make it our aim to provide a warm and welcoming environment, especially for our younger clients who may be experiencing the dentist for the first time. Here are a few practical ways you can help your child learn that visiting the dentist is a good thing.

Start Early and Keep it Simple

Scheduling a child’s first dental visit when their first tooth or couple of teeth appear is a great starting point for children to start getting used to going to the dentist.

Here at Circus Dental we offer children a free annual check-up if they have a registered parent/carer who is a regular attender (T&Cs apply) so you are able to book your child(ren) to visit with you or at a separate time.

Use Positive Language at Home

How parents talk about the dentist matters. We know it’s hard to hide pain or your own anxieties around dental care, but if possible try to role-model how important it is to go to regular dental check-ups and that it is a positive thing to do.

Talk about your positive experiences, trying to avoid words like “pain” or “hurt”. Instead, describe the visit as a chance for the dentist to “count teeth,” “check how strong they are,” or “help keep their smile shiny.”

Reading children’s books or watching short videos about dental visits can also make the experience feel familiar and fun. Plus make sure they know that we always give children a sticker at the end of their visit, and sometimes a toothbrushing timer (ask our reception team for more details)!

Pick a Good Time to Visit

When you call to book an appointment please feel free to speak to our front of house staff about the best time for your child. For example, younger children tend to do better earlier in the day, when they’re well-rested and fed.

We understand each child is different so please make your concerns or chosen time known so we can make sure we book an appointment at the best time for them.

Practice Before your Visit

Sometimes it can help to role-play a trip to the dentist at home.

Gently asking your child to let you see inside their mouth when they are brushing their teeth and counting teeth just by looking is a good place to start. Or try getting your child to look in the mirror and count their own teeth themselves - this might help normalise the experience and gives kids a sense of control.

You could even use some of their toys or dolls to play out a positive experience at the dentist - any kind of exposure to positive messaging will help.

Stay Calm and Supportive

Children are excellent emotional detectives. If parents are relaxed and calm, children are more likely to feel the same.

Let the dental team guide the appointment and trust our child-friendly approach.

It doesn’t matter if your child won’t sit in the dentist’s chair on the first visit - just being in the room and talking to the dentist is a good start. We can build up their confidence on each visit - there is no rush. Even a brief, low-stress appointment is a good start and a parenting-win!

With preparation, patience, and encouragement, a child’s first dental appointment can be the start of a healthy habit and a happy smile for years to come.
