We are very happy to welcome Zach Caunt as our newest Dental Hygienist here at Circus Dental. With a strong background in dentistry Zach is skilled at helping anyone, even the most anxious patients, to improve and maintain their oral health. Read on to find out more about Zach and his background.
How did you become a Dental Hygienist and why have you chosen to work at Circus Dental?
Having been a dental nurse previously, it was a desire to challenge myself and further my career in dentistry that led to me becoming a hygienist.
I studied at the University of Bristol and joined Circus Dental in August 2024.
I chose to join Circus Dental due to their excellent reputation in the dentistry industry. It's a brilliant opportunity to learn from some very knowledgeable and experienced professionals that will advance my own skills and help me become a better clinician.
Why is it so important to look after your oral health?
Practising good dental hygiene is massively important to not only prevent gum disease and tooth decay, but also to help maintain your overall health.
Research has shows that oral health is closely linked to overall health and that conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory infections can be associated with poor oral hygiene.
Patients commonly visit me to help maintain their oral health and treat 'sore gums'. However they also visit for cosmetic reasons such as stain removal.
What are your top tips for looking after your teeth?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and invest in an electric toothbrush if you can - they are far more effective and forgiving than manual brushes.
Use interdental aids such as floss or interdental brushes daily. These are important for removing plaque bacteria from in between your teeth where a toothbrush can't reach.
Drink plenty of water - this helps to flush out food debris and loosen bacteria from the mouth. It also maintains a neutral pH to lower the risk of tooth decay.
Why should people book a hygienist appointment?
It is 100% worth it. The appointment is gentle and can be tailored to your needs. Your teeth will feel amazingly clean afterwards and you will leave with the knowledge and skills to be able to look after your oral health effectively from home.
What's your favourite part of the job?
I love meeting new people, making a perceptible difference in their oral health and seeing their confidence in their health grow.
My time at Circus Dental so far has been fantastic. The team are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable, and have made me feel so welcome - something which they extend to their patients. Of course coming to work in such a beautiful building simply adds to the enjoyment too!
